Air enters from the sides and exhausts upward, so the unit needs clearance around it and cannot be pushed into a corner. Owners who tuck it against furniture lose a meaningful part of its throughput without realising.

One design decision explains both the strengths and the omissions. Instead of forcing air through a dense HEPA stack, the unit charges particles electrostatically and collects them on a much less restrictive filter. The fan therefore pushes against far less resistance, and that is how it moves a large room’s worth of air at a noise level you can hold a conversation over.

The washable fabric pre-filter does real work as a result, well beyond acting as a cosmetic sleeve. Pet hair and larger dust collect on it, it comes off and goes in the wash, and the inner filter lasts longer. The sleeve is also the unit’s color, a reasonable way to make a maintenance task visible.

You give up instrumentation. There is no particulate sensor, no auto mode, no display, and no app, just one button cycling three speeds. For a lot of buyers that is the appeal, and it removes the most common long-term failure point in this category, an app or a sensor that stops being supported.

Carbon is the trade-off worth weighing. There is a carbon layer in the standard filter but it is thin compared with units designed around odour removal, so cooking smells and volatile compounds from new furniture are handled less thoroughly than particulates.
