Canon AE-1 Program
Program mode makes it the easiest film SLR to hand a beginner. It needs a battery to fire and may squeal.

Is it for you
Buy it if
- You want a film camera that can run fully automatic while you learn
- Cheap FD lenses, especially the 50mm f/1.8, are part of the attraction
- You'll keep a spare 6-volt battery in the strap pocket
Skip it if
- A camera that stops when the battery dies is a deal-breaker
- You'd want to move your lenses to a modern autofocus Canon later
Program mode is the reason this outsold its siblings. Set the lens to its A position and the dial to P, and the camera picks both aperture and shutter speed. For someone moving from a phone to film, that lowers the bar for the first roll considerably.
The A-series squeal is the known fault. As the mirror mechanism’s lubricant dries, the shutter makes a high-pitched squeak. It gets worse over time and can end in a jammed mirror. Repair shops fix it routinely, but a listing that says “makes a slight noise” usually means this. Ask for a video of the shutter firing at 1/60.
Everything runs on one 6-volt battery, and without it the camera does not fire at all. These cells are sold in camera shops and online, but not every drugstore stocks them.
FD lenses are plentiful and cheap since Canon dropped the mount, which keeps the full kit inexpensive. Search with w/ 50mm and you’ll often find the body bundled with the FD 50mm f/1.8 for little more than the body alone.
