Is it for you

Buy it if

  • Trips that start on a charger and end somewhere with a shop that sells AAA
  • Mixed use — camp, night walks, an occasional run on the flat
  • You want a red mode that comes on without cycling through white first

Skip it if

  • The lamp will be out in sustained rain; IPX4 is splash, not weather-proof
  • You need a beam that reaches, rather than one that floods close ground
  • You object to a proprietary pack you will eventually have to replace

The CORE pack slides out and three AAA cells drop into the same cavity, no adapter, no cable, no different lamp. That is the reason to buy this over anything sealed. A rechargeable headlamp is one flat battery away from being a paperweight, and this one is one gas-station stop away from working again.

The USB-C port lives on the CORE pack, not on the housing, so charging means opening the case and plugging into the battery. Awkward the first time and better in the long run: a second pack charges while the first one is on your head, and a worn pack gets replaced without retiring the lamp. No cable comes in the box.

Beam shaping is where the extra money over the flashlight brands goes. The flood is wide and even with no hot spot to swing across your field of view, and the mixed setting adds enough throw to see the next trail marker without turning the near ground into glare. Reviewer consensus puts it behind lamps rated at twice the output for distance, and ahead of most of them for actually moving over ground.

Red comes on directly from off with a long press, so you never wash out anyone’s night vision to reach it. Small thing. You notice it every time you use a lamp that lacks it.

IPX4 is the specification to take seriously. This is a splash rating, not a submersion rating, and the battery cavity is a hinged door rather than a sealed compartment. Owner reports of water ingress cluster around exactly that: sustained rain, hood up, lamp soaking for hours. It survives being rained on. It does not survive being left out in it.

Output is not regulated flat. On the CORE it holds reasonably until the pack is nearly done and then steps down hard; on AAA cells it sags the way any unregulated alkaline lamp sags. Petzl publishes the reserve behavior rather than hiding it, which is more than most.

The headband is a single strap with no over-the-top loop, and it slips on smooth hair or a bare helmet shell under a run. The band is washable and sold as a spare part, which matters more than it sounds after a couple of seasons of sweat.

One button runs the whole mode cycle, so finding the setting you want in the dark means counting clicks and overshooting at least once. There is a lock for transit, and it is worth learning the gesture before the trip rather than after the pack has cooked a battery.
