Is it for you

Buy it if

  • Drafting, soldering, sewing — work that needs the surface completely clear
  • You want the light directly above the work rather than off to one side
  • A desk with an accessible edge or a rear rail to clamp onto

Skip it if

  • Your desk is glass, has a bullnose edge, or is thicker than the clamp opens
  • You expect a sprung arm that holds any pose — these are friction joints
  • The desk moves around the room, since remounting is a five-minute job each time

The clamp decides whether you own this lamp or return it. It needs a reachable edge with a flat underside, and a hutch, a rear cable tray, or a rolled edge each turn a two-minute install into a problem. Put felt or card under the pad before you tighten it — veneer marks, and the clamp has real leverage behind it.

The joints are friction, not springs. That reads as a downgrade next to a classic sprung architect arm and it behaves differently in practice: you set the pose deliberately and it stays, until months of reaching past it loosen a knuckle and the arm starts drifting. The hex key that ships in the box is the fix and you will want to keep it somewhere findable.

A long bar head lights a strip rather than a circle. Across a keyboard and a sketchpad that is exactly right. Under a raised object it draws a shadow with a hard line down one side, which is the trade for getting that much coverage out of one fixture.

Dimming is a touch strip on the head, so adjusting brightness means putting your hand into the light. The memory function is what saves it — the lamp comes back at the setting you left, and most days you never touch the control at all.

The whole argument for this shape is the surface underneath. Nothing sits on the desk, the arm folds back against the wall when you want the space, and none of the base lamps on this page can answer that.

Cable management is on you. The adapter is an inline brick and the run from clamp to outlet needs planning before the arm is positioned, not after. Ties along the arm sections keep it from swinging free.

Support is an email address attached to a seller account. Parts that turn up separately are the clamp and the power adapter, and that is the realistic ceiling on how long one of these stays in service.
