Is it for you
Buy it if
- You want the strongest hardware here and the only handheld with two real analog sticks
- OLED black levels and color matter to you
- Your Sony account already has PSP or PS1 games you can download again
Skip it if
- You want to start cheap, because most games need a memory card and those are proprietary
- You are counting on long sessions away from a charger
The PCH-1000 is the original OLED model. The later PCH-2000 Slim switched to LCD, added a little battery life, and moved to micro-USB charging. People who mostly care about the screen still pick the 1000 for the OLED’s blacks.
The PCH-1000 has no usable internal storage, so most games won’t run without a Vita memory card, and those cards are Sony’s own format. The card is often missing from used listings or sold separately. Count it as part of the cost before comparing listings.
The OLED has its own wear issue. Long-time owners report mild burn-in from static menus on heavily used units, and some panels show uneven, blotchy dark tones in flat dark scenes. Neither shows up in listing photos taken with the screen off, so ask for one on a dark gray background.
Sony announced in 2021 that the Vita’s PlayStation Store would close, then reversed the decision weeks later. Purchases already on an account can be downloaded again on a used unit; check Sony’s current support pages before counting on buying new games there.
