Is it for you

Buy it if

  • Clipping a drive to a bag strap is genuinely useful to you
  • You want ruggedisation in the smallest possible package
  • Field work where the drive gets dropped

  • This is the only copy of anything you cannot lose
  • You would rather not track firmware advisories for a storage device

In 2023 this line drew a substantial wave of reports in which drives disconnected mid-use and became unreadable, taking data with them. Firmware updates followed and the affected production was identified. Nothing about the shell caused any of it. The episode remains the most cited reliability event in recent portable storage history.

What follows from that is not “avoid” so much as “do not make this the only copy.” Sound advice for any single drive, and advice this particular line earned the hard way. If you buy one, update the firmware before putting anything important on it, and check that the model you receive is a current production revision instead of old retail stock.

As a physical object, though, this is the best-executed drive in the comparison. Small enough to disappear into a pocket, wrapped in silicone, rated IP55, and fitted with a carabiner loop that turns out to be far more useful than it sounds. Clipped to a bag strap, the drive is accessible without opening anything and cannot be left behind on a table.

Performance is competitive with the other Gen 2 drives here, and the compact form factor means it fits where the armored alternatives do not. The same small size means the heaviest sustained writes warm it quickly. Warm drives throttle.
