Portable SSDs, scored on five axes

Does a faster portable SSD do anything if your laptop cannot feed it?

What this order is based on

  • Speed counts only where a common laptop port can actually deliver it
  • Documented reliability history is weighted into durability, including past firmware failures
  • Bundled encryption and backup software counts toward ease of use
  • Shell ratings are judged for the way these drives really get carried

Sorted by Overall — the plain average of this category's axes, highest first.

The short version

Portable SSDs, scored on five axes — order by Overall

05SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD7.8

Portable SSD comparisons are usually a bar chart of sequential speeds, which is close to useless for buying one. Most laptops cap below the fastest drives here, most people move files rather than edit off them, and the drives that fail do not fail slowly.

So durability carries real weight in this ranking, and it includes documented history rather than shell ratings alone. One drive here is physically the most rugged of the group and still scores lowest on that axis, for reasons that have nothing to do with its rubber jacket.

If you edit video directly from the drive and own a machine with the port to match, read the performance column instead of the total.
