Ruggedness on a portable drive is usually sold as a rubber jacket and an ingress rating. Both matter, and neither is what actually loses people their work.

Two failure modes do. The first is thermal: a drive that throttles or shuts down partway through a long transfer, which is a real risk on the smallest, best-sealed designs. The second is firmware, which is invisible until it is catastrophic, and which is why the toughest-looking drive on this page sits at the bottom of it.
