  • Software you have to keep running counts against ease of use

The enthusiast keyboard argument usually collapses into subjective talk about typing feel, so this list scores four other things next to it: what it costs, whether it survives, whether the software gets in the way, and how it looks on a desk other people see.

Two things fall out. Boards you can open and re-switch score higher on durability than boards you cannot, because a single failed switch becomes a repair rather than a replacement. And driver suites that must stay resident cost real points on ease of use, which is where the gaming brands lose ground they won on build.

If this is your first mechanical keyboard, the second entry is a better starting point than the first, whatever the totals say.
