A used phone’s real price includes the patch years it has left. Two phones that cost about the same on
eBay can be two years apart in how long they stay safe to bank on. This ranking reads each maker’s
published end-of-support date first and only then looks at the hardware. That is how the S23, a faster
phone than either Pixel 8, ends up fourth.
All five are scored on the tech axes. Durability carries the update window and known
battery failures. Value weighs a clean used unit against those years, not against what it cost new.
The end date comes before the spec sheet
Google lists October 2030 for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro and May 2028 for the 7a. Samsung promised seven
years of OS and security support with the S24 series, which runs into early 2031, and five years of
security for the S23, which runs out in early 2028.
Every phone here will feel fast enough until its last patch. None of them will feel slow first. The
calendar retires these phones, not the chip.
Three locks, three different checks
Most bad eBay phone purchases come down to a lock nobody checked.
The carrier lock and the payment plan. Search with “unlocked” in the query and confirm it in the item
specifics. Then run the IMEI through a carrier unlock check, not just a blacklist check. On Samsung the
check matters twice, because a financed phone can be locked through Knox Guard months after you buy it.
The account lock. A phone wiped while still signed into the previous owner’s Google account stops at
Factory Reset Protection and cannot be set up. Ask the seller to confirm the account was removed before
the reset. A listing that says “FRP locked” or “account locked” is a parts phone, whatever the photos look
like.
The international model. An S24 with Exynos inside is a real Galaxy, but it is a different phone from
the US unit reviewed here. Check the model number in the listing: US units end in U or U1.
What eBay’s protection does and doesn’t cover
eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers a phone that never arrives or doesn’t match its description. A blacklisted
IMEI or an undisclosed account lock counts as not as described. A battery that dies by mid-afternoon
usually doesn’t, unless the listing promised a health figure.
So ask for one. Samsung shows battery status in the Samsung Members app diagnostics. Pixel battery health
reporting depends on the model and Android version, so ask for a screenshot of whatever the seller can
show. Then make sure the number is in the listing text, where it becomes part of the description.
eBay Refurbished listings are a step up from plain used. They are graded by condition, sold by
sellers approved for the program, and come with a warranty whose length depends on the grade. They
cost more, and on a phone with an unknown battery, that warranty is most of what the extra money buys.
Skip “For parts or not working” listings unless you repair phones yourself. On eBay that condition means
the seller is not promising it powers on, and the Money Back Guarantee will not cover it for that.
Search terms that clean up the results
eBay search mixes the phone with its accessories and its siblings. A few terms help:
- Add -case -protector -parts to drop accessories and broken units.
- For the base S24 or S23, add -ultra -plus -fe so the larger and cheaper variants fall away.
- For the Pixel 8, add -pro. For the 8 Pro, the search already narrows itself.
- Storage size in the query, like 256GB, is worth adding, since none of these phones take a memory card.
Long updates, long zoom, or a two-year phone
Keeping it four years or handing it down later: the S24 or either Pixel 8. All three are patched until
2030 or later.
Photos are the reason: the Pixel 8 Pro for its 5x zoom. If you never zoom, the regular Pixel 8 takes
nearly the same main-camera photo for less.
A two-year phone, or a phone for travel: the S23. It is quick and small, and its short runway matters
less if you plan to replace it anyway.
A first phone or a backup: the 7a. It costs the least here, and only its update date really holds it
back.
If you are deciding between Android and an iPhone, the used iPhone ranking
reads the same way, with Apple’s support history in place of published dates. A tablet to pair with the
phone is on the used iPad page.
Where the order is hardest on a phone
The S23 takes the biggest hit from this method. It is well built, efficient, and small. It loses on one
number: a patch window that closes about sixteen months from now. Bought knowingly for a short stint, it
is often the least expensive way into Snapdragon 8-class speed.
The Pixel 8 Pro ranks under the S24 even with the better camera. Tensor G3 runs warm and drains faster
than Snapdragon on weak signal, and a three-year-old battery makes that gap wider, not narrower.
