Every laptop here runs an Apple-silicon chip, and that’s the first cut. Apple has said macOS Tahoe is the
last release for Intel Macs, so an Intel MacBook bought today is close to the end of its update life,
however tempting the price. The five Apple-silicon models that remain are ordered on the
tech axes, where memory and remaining support count for more than benchmark scores.
Memory ages a Mac faster than its chip
Even the M1 is quick enough for everyday work. What separates a Mac that still feels fast in four years
from one that doesn’t is usually memory, and Apple solders it to the chip, so a laptop keeps whatever it
shipped with. 8GB handles a browser and documents. Add a photo library, a few dozen tabs, and a video call,
and the Mac starts swapping to the SSD.
That’s the main reason the 14-inch Pro leads. It never shipped with less than 16GB, while every Air on this
page was sold with 8GB at some point. On an Air, search with “16GB” in the query, then confirm it in the
listing’s About This Mac screenshot rather than the title.
The title is a guess, the serial number isn’t
eBay titles for MacBooks are written loosely. “MacBook Air 2022” could be an M2 or a leftover M1, and
“MacBook Pro 13 2020” could be Intel or M1. Three details settle it: the chip and memory on About This Mac,
the storage in System Settings, and the serial number, which you can enter on Apple’s coverage site to see
the exact model. A seller who won’t share any of the three is selling something they haven’t checked.
Search queries that include the chip (“m2”), the memory (“16gb”), and the storage (“512gb”) cut the
results to the configuration you want, and they surface sellers who bothered to list the details.
Locked Macs are sold as bargains
Two kinds of lock turn a good-looking MacBook into a paperweight. Activation Lock ties it to the previous
owner’s Apple Account until they release it. Remote Management, on former company and school laptops,
survives a full erase because the enrollment lives with Apple, not on the drive. Listings that say
“iCloud locked,” “MDM,” or “bypass” describe one of these, and the same machines fill eBay’s “For parts or
not working” condition at prices that look too good, because they are.
Ordinary used listings carry eBay’s Money Back Guarantee, which covers a laptop that doesn’t match its
description. Certified Refurbished units, restored by the manufacturer or an approved refurbisher, go further
and state their warranty on the listing. Set the Mac up the day it arrives either way, so a lock or a dead
key turns up inside the return window.
Why the M3 Air sits above the M2 Air
They look identical and feel nearly the same in daily use. The M3’s lead comes from durability: it’s the
newest chip here, so it will stay on macOS releases the longest, and it drives two external displays with the
lid closed where the M2 drives one. The M2 is the better buy whenever the gap in asking prices is wide, and a
512GB M2 beats a 256GB one for anyone who fills the drive, because the base model’s SSD is slower.
The 13-inch M1 Pro sits last for a plain reason. An M1 or M2 Air costs about the same and is the better laptop
for nearly everyone. The exception is long exports and compiles, where its fan holds full speed after an Air
slows down.
Photo work, a docked desk, or a student budget
- Photo or video work: the 14-inch Pro. The screen, the ports, and the 16GB floor all pay off.
- Two monitors on a desk: the M3 Air, docked with the lid closed.
- Daily carry and video calls: the M2 Air, for the lighter body and 1080p camera.
- A student or a writer on a budget: the M1 Air. Put the savings toward a 16GB unit or a new battery.
If you’d rather run Windows or Linux, the same off-lease economics apply to
used ThinkPads. For a phone or tablet in the same ecosystem, the lock checks above
carry straight over to used iPhones and used iPads.
Questions people ask
- What is Remote Management on a used Mac, and can it be removed?
- Companies and schools enroll Macs in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager so their settings install automatically. An enrolled Mac shows a Remote Management screen during setup even after a full erase, because the enrollment is tied to its serial number on Apple's side. Only the original organization can release it. Listings that mention DEP, MDM, or bypass describe a Mac you don't fully own.
- How many battery cycles is too many on a used MacBook?
- Apple rates the batteries in these laptops to retain up to 80 percent of their capacity at 1,000 cycles. A unit under 300 cycles has plenty of life; 300 to 700 is normal for a two-to-four-year-old daily machine; above 800, budget for a replacement. macOS also shows a condition reading. Service Recommended means the battery has worn past Apple's threshold.
- Is 8GB of memory enough on an Apple-silicon Mac?
- For browsing, documents, and streaming, yes. With many browser tabs, a photo editor, or a virtual machine open, an 8GB Mac swaps memory to the SSD, which slows it down and adds wear to the drive. Memory is soldered and can't be upgraded later, so 16GB is the safer used purchase if the price difference is modest. Apple itself moved its laptops to a 16GB minimum in late 2024.
- Does warranty or AppleCare+ carry over to a used MacBook?
- Coverage follows the serial number, not the buyer. Entering the serial on Apple's coverage page shows whether any limited warranty or AppleCare+ plan remains and when it ends. Most of these laptops are past Apple's one-year warranty, so a remaining AppleCare+ plan is the exception worth paying a little extra for. Ask the seller for the serial before buying and check it yourself.
